The article deals with the description of causal dependences in the
process of risk appraisal and criticality of the element of the infrastructure with the
accent on mutual relations and differences in understanding of these
interpretations. The term of criticality is often used as an equivalent of the term of
risk, nevertheless both terms are different in many ways and can not be exchanged
in many areas. The article defines the dissimilarity of these terms and gives the
possibilities of the aaplication of the term of criticality for the need to identify the
element of the territorially important infrastructure.
